From the beginning, JANES ADDICTION has thrown the most unique parties in rock, mixing a fierce musicality with theatrical flair onstage. 2012 sees the band--whove always outrageously combined electricity, sex and danger--return in support of their acclaimed album THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST (Capitol Records), which features the now-buzzing-at-radio track Starting February 22, this special run of North American showscalled Theatre of the Escapists--will bring the band to intimate venues, most of which are classic theatres. The alternative rock pioneers--frontman Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bassare poised to deliver an immersive theatrical experience as only they can. Tickets go on sale January 14, with a pre-sale set for 10:00 EST this Wednesday, January 11. There will be a special package on JanesAddiction.com where fans can pair up their presale ticket with a high-quality lithograph. The lithograph will be signed by the band and sold only at the JanesAddiction.com presale.

Many of you love the song Irresistible Force. You've asked me what the lyrics were about. Usually I wouldn't discuss it- I'd prefer to leave it up to the interpretation of the listener. For who likes to be given answers to a puzzle? Right? The fun runs out. However, there have been several misinterpretations given out by the press, and as the author, I do wish to clarify. The song is really a love story, and a theory on creation. Combining the science of the big bang, and the theology of the Old Testament. Adding the notion that it was in fact a conscious male-to-female act of cosmic love. I know of no life that was ever created withoutmale-female union. A sexual explosion caused the creation of our galaxy, andall earthly life. We- in both his and hers image- continue this process. The line "We've become a big business" has nothing to do with Jane's Addiction- but speaks about God and his bride. "A galaxy merger. Two of us a big bang!" A true romance in the cosmos...

Live Review: Jane's Addiction The Ford Amphitheatre, Hollywood Hills

"I got a job to do," smiled Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell at the beginning of his band's second sold out show at The Ford Amphitheatre in the Hollywood Hills.

His "job" is saving rock 'n' roll, and he and his cohorts still do it better than anybody. Under a hazy night sky nestled in the hills, Jane's Addiction put on a show for the ages complete with lasers, scantily clad dancers, and a whole lot of timeless tunes. The grime and glamor of the City of Angels colored the metallic stomp of opener "Whores". Instantly, these four musicians cast a sonic spell over the audience and the entire city with airtight riffing, primal percussion, a bass throb, and Farrell's uncanny pipes.

Lasers flashed in tandem with Chris Chaney's four-string rumble during a raucous "Just Because". Farrell slid across the stage with inspiring mojo and uncontainable energy before launching into a divine rendition of "Ain't No Right". Dave Navarro's wild shredding matched the intensity of the laser show as he tore through a fleet-fingered lead that made jaws drop. He sauntered to the edge of the stage and played each note with a palpable passion. As the Ritual de lo Habitual number came to a fiery close, Farrell jested, "That's some L.A. shit. They don't know on the East Coast. They will never know."

"TedJust Admit It" morphed from a psychedelic jam into another tremendous display of Navarro's virtuosity. Farrell shook and shimmied along to Stephen Perkins's crushing beat as the refrain of "Sex is violent" echoed from the Hollywood Hills all the way back to the East Coastwhether or not they get it.
B After a victorious flood of lights and notes, Farrell smirked, "We'd rather die than fucking suck in L.A."

He has nothing to worry about as Jane's Addiction stood triumphant for the entire show. It was one of those magical gigs where every element simply worked. On stage, Jane's Addiction display the kind of mystique that's belonged to the likes of Led Zeppelin and few others. However, they're one of a kind.

Farrell went on, "There's a cat named Jim that said, 'The west is the best'," Navarro kicked into the lilting blues of The Doors' "The End". Quickly, the quartet launched into "Been Caught Stealing" with a roar. The guitarist engaged an entrancing jazz break, and it was a moment emblematic of his versatility.

The first single from their forthcoming The Great Escape Artist, "End to the Lies" is a new Jane's Addiction classic. Live, the song displayed every element of their genius. It's got Perkins's explosive polyrhythmic pummeling, sexy, slinky bass lines, Navarro's immortal shredding, and Farrell's poetic lyrics and punchy delivery. "Ocean Size" rose and fell like the ultimate wave breaking into another rapturous outro.

"Have you been up for three days?" Farrell asked. "Three Days" is alternative rock's answer to "Stairway to Heaven". The dancers writhed on the amps toward the back of the stage after emerging from the hills themselves. Farrell rocked the maracas in front Navarro as he maniacally ripped his fret board like Jimi Hendrix by way of James Hetfield. However, "Three Days" emanates a scorching sexual elegance punctuated by Farrell's hyper charged hum. That translated seamlessly into the spacey roller coaster of "Irresistible Force" from The Great Escape Artist.

"Mountain Song" and "Stop!" climaxed with an explosion of confetti. Then, the whole band took over the forefront of the stage for a hypnotic "Jane Says".

Towards the end of the set, Farrell declared, "We don't like Led Zeppelin. We LOVE Led Zeppelin. If only they would take us on tourget to Twitter".

Navarro strummed the intro to "Gallows Pole" as Farrell channeled Plant. Hopefully, the Twitter takeover is already underway. Either way, Jane's Addiction are doing the job quite impressively.

When I moved to Los Angeles in 1986 to pursue my rock dreams, hair metal was king. The bands playing the Sunset Strip all looked the same, sounded the same, pouted the same. Then one night I went to a downtown joint called Als Bar and some odd tattooed fellow gave me a bootleg cassette of a local band called Janes Addiction. It blew my mind, jolted the axis of my understanding of rock music, and convinced me to extend the lease on my apartment on Normandie.

I had never heard anything like it. It was like a punk rock Led Zeppelin. Janes provided all the testosterone fueled guitar riffage that my suburban upbringing required but mixed it with gorgeous acoustic songs and an underground artistry that was completely original and completely awesome. They didnt look or sound like any other band in the history of rock and within a short period of time they absolutely owned this city.

I found myself sneaking into Janes rehearsals, sitting on some nasty carpet in the corner wide eyed with wonder. But it wasnt until New Years Eve 1988 that I got to actually meet the band. Perry was friends with the singer of my local band Lock Up and asked us to IMPERSONATE Janes Addiction at their New Years Eve show. We dutifully learned Pigs In Zen and in full Janes outfits stepped onto the stage (thankfully there were no cameras rolling because my Dave Navarro wig was an unholy nightmare). In the dim lighting the crowd went wild. Id played a lot of rock shows, been to a lot of rock shows, but Id never seen or felt anything like THIS. It was like grabbing a live power line with a million volts coursing through it. People didnt just love this band, they believed in this band and were ready to go apeshit. We played a few minutes of the song, the lights went out, the real Janes Addiction came on, and I went back to my apartment on Normandie. But I vowed that night that one day I was going to be in a band that felt like THAT onstage.

It is fitting that Janes Addiction are being inducted into the Rock Walk on Sunset Blvd. because Janes are a quintessentially Los Angeles band. From The Doors, to X, to The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns n Roses, and later Rage Against the Machine and System of a Down, they are a band that could have happened nowhere else and a band that sounds like the city in which they formed. You can hear the violence, the drugs, the beauty, the ocean, the hope, smog, fear and redemptive power of this city in Janes music. And while, like all the best bands, Janes Addiction are greater than the sum of their parts, each member of the band is extraordinary in his own right.

Stephen Perkins tribal whirlwind of drumming and his great sense of dynamics propelled Janes music into directions other bands could only dream of. Dave Navarros shirtless power riffing, wild astral solos and subtle strumming gave metal heads like myself a reason to love the band and challenged indie rock snobs to deal with the presence of an undeniably great ROCK guitarist in a underground band. Eric Averys murderously heavy grooves formed the backbone of some of Janes Addictions greatest songs and rank among the most badass riffs of all time. Flea and Chris Chaney maintained a level of bass playing excellence in later incarnations of the band. And Perry Farrell is unlike any other frontman, singer or lyricist in the history of rock. His voice, sometimes child-like and innocent, sometimes bone chillingly urgent, pulled gorgeous twisted melodies out of thin air while he spun deep and true poetic tales of life in this city. He presided as the furious Santeria shaman over their legendary live shows as the band destroyed venue after venue around the world and single handedly forged the Lollapalooza Nation, smashing barriers between genres, bringing the fringe into the mainstream, and allowing rockers and rappers to share the same stage for the first time.

Nirvana often gets credit for being the first alternative band to break through, the band that changed music and led rock out of the hair metal wilderness of the 80s. Thats just not true. It was Janes Addiction. Inspiring, intelligent, furiously rocking and artistically deep as fuck. As their number one fan Im happy to report that my good friends Janes Addiction are just as great today as that day I snuck into their rehearsal space long ago. And so without further ado:

South America Eats Jane's Addiction Pt. 2: JA @ Lollapalooza Chile

After all the anticipation, all the hype, all the hard work, all the travel, the day is here. 20 years after Lollapalooza numero uno, the first international Lolla has arrived in Santiago, Chile.

Jane's played the first Lolla, in what was supposed to be their farewell tour, yet here they are, still soldiering on. What a privilege it's been to peer behind the curtain of the Jane's Addiction circus. The day starts out with the ring master himself, Perry Farrell, giving a press conference.

Someone asked how Perry found his way to Chile of all places to do the first international Lollapalooza. The answer was simple, it was the feeling for the people, and technology. Perry had been to Santiago, Chile to see a show by The Pixies. The crowd was amazing and the city was inviting. When you are in a place like Santiago where many American bands have never been in their entire careers, bands that the fan's have memorized their lyrics, youtubed their videos and bought their merch, all from afar, when that band finally comes to this town, they give them their all. Perry's famous instinct, the same one that helped him create the modern American festival movement, the same one that helped break acts from NIN to Pearl Jam to Lady Gaga, was activated. He also met some great partners from Lotus productions, a local company, who's young energy and rising skill reminded him of the friends who surrounded him when he first started putting on shows. Parallel to that, the technology had finally gotten to the point where he felt comfortable the people here in Chile could have the same level of quality in the experience as they have in Chicago. Thus Lolla in Chile was born.

After they finished playing, Stephen aka Perk aka Mr. Communicator chills w Eric Wilson, bassist & founding member of Sublime.

Here's one half of the Jane's dancer duo aka "The Twins" Etty Farrell (And star of "Married to Rock") hanging out backstage with a tasty drank. This woman can drink the band under the table and still dance for hours in stilettos!

Actor David Arquette shows up with his buddy Tall Mike. David's a huge Jane's Addiction fan and rescheduled his whole trip to Chile so he could watch them today. That's Mr. Peter Katsis, Jane's manager and one of the legendary behind the scenes figures of the rock world (And also the worlds second tallest manager behind Led Zepplin's manager and ex-wrestler Peter Grant.)

David hears about our suicide suspension artists and is fascinated by what they do, so we head over to check them out and their process. When artists say they shed blood, sweat and tears for their art, no one means it as literally as these grrrls.

David get's a little "suicide" workout in before the show.

The set list is typed up. Jane's is so unpredictable that this might change while they are onstage, but fuck it, it's rock and roll!

A thunderous barrage begins to literally shake the trailer next to me. It's none other than Perk's drums, Chris Chaney's bass and Dave's Ibanez RG beginning the sonic assault known as "band practice". Before every show these three start off practicing Jane's tunes, but invariably end up "Stray"ing into everything from "Warpigs" to Sly & The Family Stone covers. One of the great things about this band, is that through all the tumult, Dave, Perk and Chaney have found a way to play together in many incarnations. The music never dies. I eventually hear Perry's wail begin to soar over the riffage. It's almost showtime. I quietly open the door and sneak my way into the small room these rock god's have positioned themselves in.

I almost feel like a child in a cage with lions. Weather they bite, or just nuzzle, one paw swipe can still send you across the room. Instead they thankfully ignore me and continue to rock out. Having blasted out "Whores" & "Superhero" (Theme song from the HBO show "Entourage") they are now ready for the stage. It's time!

I follow them as fast as I can, catching a random David Arquette interview on the way, an MTV crew interviewing Perry blocking my path as we walk up the stairs to backstage.

We reach the front stage and Chris "Captain" Roberts our production manager shoos them away. At the end of the above video you can hear Dave chasing me off stage as well LoL. The men position themselves, drums, bass, guitar and voice. The grrrls are hooked up to their harnesses, their back flesh stretching into small wings as they are hoisted into the air and swung.

Through the opaque Kabuki screen, the audience see's movement and cheers. The force of 50,000 people, focusing their joy directly at you is a powerful thing indeed. I feel their energy in waves, as they begin to sing soccer chants in unison, stamping their feet and clapping. Perry shakes out his hands, Perkins stretches his neck. The girls swing ominously over head, dark angels ready to commence their spell. Chaney begins the bass line to "Whore's" and the kabuki drops, the crowd roaring in approval!

Dusk turns to night, as the crowd continues to chant, singing "Ain't No Right" word for word.

Perry grabs his bottle of wine as they launch into "Ted, Just Admit It". The gorgeous dancer's Etty & Stephanie make their first appearance as "The Twins". A fevered dream Perry had many years ago when he created the artwork for "Nothing's Shocking" come to life. They grab a video camera and begin filming each other as a sexual cinema verite. The feed goes out to the crowd onto the jumbotrons.

Like a freight train out of control, the momentum keeps rolling. They go into their new single "End To The Lies".Produced by Rich Costey w Dave Sitek of TV on The Radio playing bass, it also features the music of the Jajouka, master musicians from a small town in the Rif Mountains of N. Africa. They celebrate a unique religion that has existed for 1,000's of years.

The dancers come out once again for "3 Days", a story of 3 lovers who spend a long weekend submerging themselves in the taboo. The song ends with the lovers together now bound through time.

Perry asks the crowd if they are ready. The epic "Mountain Song" riff begins, as Jane's rips through one of their favorites. According to Perk, they have never played a show without playing this tune. The crowd in their hands, they then leave the stage, the audience not sure if it's the end. They begin chanting "Juanes Addiction, Juanes Addiction!", stamping their feet and chanting so loud I'm sure you could hear it in the mountains. The band reappears with a flourish, jumping right into "Stop", giant confetti cannons going off on stage and in the crowd. It was like a hurricane of gold and white, with Jane's rocking out in the eye. Fucking magical!

They end the show with everyone's favorite song "Jane's Say's", based on a prostitute they knew back in the early days who was one of their first fan's.

Having played an amazing performance, the original members all come out and thank the crowd one more time. Chile, you were everything they expected and more.

As always, JANES ADDICTIONsinger Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins--keeps things interesting.

The exotic sounds on End To The Liesthe bands newly issued (April 7) free downloadable track from the bands upcoming first studio album in eight years on Capitol Records, THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTISTare the unique contribution of the legendary The Master Musicians of Joujouka.

Hailing from the village of Jajouka near Ksar-el-Kebir in the Ahl Srif mountain range of the southern Rif Mountains in northern Morocco, they are Sufi trance musicians who use reed, pipe and percussion to create drones and complex rhythms unique to Joujouka. The musicians are known for their connections with the Beat Generation and Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones, who recorded them in 1968 for an album that was released in 1971, Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka.

"We wanted to add a sense of ancient ritual and some depth beyond normal instrumentation, getting off the typical path that rock bands use, etc, says Perry Farrell. And we wanted the music to cast a spell on the

For THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST, JANE'S ADDICTION have been working in Los Angeles with producer Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol), with TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek on the team. Costey says that The Master Musicians of Joujoukas parts actually werent recorded with the band or in a studio. It was all recorded in the Master Musicians Madrassa (school house) which is out in the village of Joujouka in Morocco where they live. The drums were recorded in the kitchen and the rhiatas in the main room of the house."

Farrell adds: "Lots of sounds were recorded with them so you may hear more of them on the record. You'll have to wait and see."

South America Eats Jane's Addiction Pt. 1: JA in Buenos Aires

We head to the empty park where Jane's will be rocking only hours from now. It's a free show thrown by the Argentinian phone company "Movistar". 10 - 12,000 peeps are expected, a perfect first show for Jane's South American reintroduction.

The boys step on stage and begin to rehearse "End To The Lie's", a sick new track (Produced by Rich Costey w Dave Sitek of TV on The Radio playing bass, as well as writing and programming on it) that was leaked on Chilean radio the day before. Jane's Addiction - End to the Lies by paniko

After rehearsal, Stephen chats it up with members of "Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros" a really kool band out of LA who will be opening the show for them tonight. Aaron in the rainbow hoodie actually played for Jane's during the "Strays" tour.

The set list for tonight, although I believe "Chip Away" will be scratched as Chris Chaney has only played it once before and they might need to practice it a few more times.

Here's that ONE TIME Chris Chaney has participated in one of my favorite Jane's traditions, the drum circle rocking of "Chip Away". I will never forget the time they performed this @ Madison Square Garden on a platform in the middle of the crowd. It was fucking epic!

We mob through the alleys of Buenos Aires back to the hotel to get changed and ready for the show. It's cobbled streets are not doing wonders for Etty's bum or Perrys legs as she has kindly chosen to sit on Perry's lap so I can fit in the van. We ride on!

After several hours of prep, we head back to the venue, the lines outside stretching down the block and out of sight. Fans flock to the van trying to see the band, but the cops aka "Gendarmies" (Who look more like storm troopers LoL) block them from getting their fix. Perk, Dave & Chris go to rehearse some more-

And I look for the ladies Miss Crash and Samar as they prepare to get their hooks in.

Suicide suspension is seemingly something that no one would want to try, yet it's popularity is growing, especially in South America and Russia. The girls tell me of young Russian kids doing suspension dives off bridges in St. Petersburg. Imagine falling 50 feet, hooks in your back ripping through your skin the only thing keeping you from going SPLAT, gnarly!

It's now show time! I sneak behind the kabuki (Giant black cloth hiding the band from view) right before things get set off. The kabuki drops and Jane's rips into "Whores", sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The girls writhe like snakes on hook's above the stage, Jane's sonic assault sending shock waves through the Buenos Aires night.

There was moshing and stage diving aplenty, reminded me of the old Lollapalooza days.

The crowd chanted along with almost all the tunes, including newer songs like "Superhero". Several fans came up to me afterwards and said they first heard "Superhero" as the "Entourage" theme song, not even knowing it was a Jane's song. Well they know now!

JA thunder into "Mountain Song", which 23 years later still remains one of my favorite rock songs ever written. What Jane's song is your favorite?

I got tons of video of the show, but looks like I will have to keep that under wraps for now = / Jane's killed it, their new song "End To The Lie's" premiered with an amazing reception by the very game Buenos Aires crowd. The band blasted out with a police escort right after they left the stage.

I got left behind as I was grabbing my gear. Perry's one piece of advice for me at the beginning of this trip "Stay close to me, if you don't you might just get left in the dust." That appears to be the golden rule for this entire journey, I will try not to violate it again!I eventually get back to the Sheraton, ending my eve with a night cap alongside Mr. Chaney and Mr. Perkins. "Jane's Says" vodka anyone?

One of music's most iconic frontmen, Dave Gahan has become a hero to millions as the voice of Depeche Mode. His commanding vocals helped establish the legendary group's signature sound, which has left an indelible legacy on indie and popular music. Today, Depeche Mode remains among a select premier league of recording artists who have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, making them one of the most successful bands in history. With Gahan as their frontman, all of the band's 12 studio releases have reached the Top 10, not only in the UK and United States, but in more than 20 countries around the globe. Gahan, who is renowned for his electric stage presence and high-energy performances, has consistently propelled Depeche Mode's larger than life live shows to new heights. Perry Farrell Talks New Jane's Addiction LP

Friday, January 28, was a very big day for alt-rock pioneer Perry Farrell.

He celebrated his ninth wedding anniversary at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, with his wife and collaborator, Etty Lau, and unveiled the lineup for Lollapalooza Chile, the first international installment of the legendary rock fest, which he founded 20 years ago. He was also preparing to hit the studio with Jane's Addiction the following Monday to work on their long-awaited fourth album, The Great Escape Artist.

After a few setbacks, including the departure of founding bassist Eric Avery and his short-lived replacement, ex-Guns N' Roses low-ender Duff McKagan, Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins will hole up in a Los Angeles studio with their new songwriting partner, TV on the Radio multi-instrumentalist and production whiz Dave Sitek, to bring to life the musical ideas they have been trading online.

"We are taking great risks and writing in ways that we have never written before," Farrell, 51, says of the bandmembers, who are embracing digital technology -- synths, MIDI, effects, et al. -- for the first time in their 25-year career. "We're producing a really amazing piece of art, an amazing piece of music. It will make people say, 'This is strangely beautiful.'"

How did TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek get involved with the new Jane's Addiction LP?
When Duff McKagan decided he didn't want to work with us anymore, there was a moment of silence. Everyone had gripes, but at the same time, it was a sad time because we were building something together. It's like a sports team, then one guy gets traded or retires or gets injured. But your team has to go on. That's the state we were in. Our producer Rich Costey (Muse, Rage Against The Machine, My Chemical Romance, Weezer, Franz Ferdinand) said, 'Hey, I have a friend' and it was Dave. Rich said, 'If you guys work together, there would be explosions.' So I looked Dave up. He was just finishing up a record of his own. But when we met, he was very enthusiastic. He's a true artist and with an original, contemporary sound.

Is he a permanent member of Jane's, then? Will he play with the band live?
Well, Dave's in TV on the Radio and he loves producing. I raised the idea of him playing with us. It makes sense since he's helping write and record. But I sense that his heart is in producing and writing and constantly doing that. I'm just happy that we're friends and writing partners. He's like a pretty girl that I'm sleeping with but don't have to marry [laughs]. But playing live is where it's at. It's as important as a record and, some might say, even more important. The record is a calling card and it's a tombstone -- it's what you leave behind and also what you're presenting to people.

What, exactly, is the creative process for the LP?
We are writing now like a modern band would write. When we started in the mid-'80s there wasn't personal computers. I'm very excited about all those technological aspects of music. So, our creative process is very different. We have options now to make music through technology and we're taking advantage of it; we're not afraid of it. But we're not just slapping loops together. We're true musicians. We're using technology for ideas and some of those ideas remain in the song. We'll write some tracks and send them back and forth, and we'll deconstruct a demo. Paradigms start to appear from this digital correspondence. We've already written three albums worth of music. But today, with everyone's short attention span, we'll only have nine songs on the album. You know, refine it down to 45 minutes of material. Next week, when we finally get into the studio together, these loops and electronic ideas that we've written through email will come together.

How do the songs sounding compared to previous Jane's releases?
Well, all I can say is that we're on the right track. It would be easy to say, 'I've got a big reputation. You're not going to tell me how to write a song. I know how to write a song. I know how to play my instrument. And here's an idea.' That's not going to cut it today. Everybody's ears need to be excited with fresh sounds, interesting chord structures, arrangements, and compositions. And it's not easy to come up with something original and fresh. What can help you are electronics. They've helped me to not rush and not be full of myself and realize my reputation isn't going to get you by.

You're recording many of the vocals alone for the first time ever. Is it difficult to self edit, when in the past the band would express their opinions?
Everybody is of course allowed their opinion. If they don't like something, they express it, usually, by not saying anything. Like, I won't get an email that says, 'Oh my god, that's a killer vocal!' I did one track that I thought was really funny. It was a song called, 'I Can't Party Anymore,' and I didn't hear anything back so I assumed they hated it. But then the very next song I sent in started a rapid fire. Within hours the band was emailing me, 'I love it,' and all that. I'm very fortunate that I get to write all the music that I want. I write contemporary rock with Jane's. And I also write house music with people like Kascade. Luckily, I have dual worlds. I can always escape to another world if I want to be sarcastic or punk. Or another to be romantic...

Which brings up to the LP's title, The Great Escape Artist. What's the significance?
I love being able to escape my past, even though my past was great. I just love the future even more. I can personally not give a shit about what I've done in the past; I don't want it to handicap me from doing something even better in the future. The only way to do that is to have courage to escape the past -- both the mistakes and the remarkable things. You have to take risks. When it comes to being a musician and especially a live musician, I've thought long and hard about what type of music I've wanted to make. There have been people that have made protest or social commentary music, then there's music made to escape. Jimi Hendrix's music was escapism. Ziggy Stardust is escapism. Iggy Pop. They're not hung up on making people bummed out or angry. Their intent is to have people escape, like they have amnesia as to what their life is really about. It's about going to a place where they can be happy and wild and loose and sexual.

So, when you need to escape what do you do?
Music is always my great escape. I'll perform with Etty, or I'll DJ. Or I'll play live with Jane's, which is always an escape. I get to be that wild child and do whatever the hell I want onstage. And then to escape from music I'll do board sports. I still love snowboarding and surfing and skateboarding. My next snowboarding trip is to Whistler for my birthday. It's beautiful there. I ride bikes too. Actually, I have a bike that Lance Armstrong gave me when he won his sixth title. I love to go for long bike rides along the California coastline.

It's almost like a replacement for drugs
Yeah! Exactly! I aspire to be the great escape artist.

Kanye West, Jane's Addiction, Killers Headlining Lollapalooza Chile

Kanye West, Jane's Addiction and the Killers will help Lollapalooza make its overseas debut this spring, as the U.S. festival heads to Chile on April 2 and 3. The full lineup for the festival, which will be held in O'Higgins Park in Santiago and produced by Lotus Productions and C3 Presents, was announced this morning (Jan. 28).

"Our ambition is to plant a very strong seed in Chile. One that will grow over the years, and provide Santiago with an event for the ages," says Lollapalooza founder and Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell in a statement. The singer added that there is "Chilean talent in the mix" for the festival, and that he and his promotional partners will return to Chile "to work on the other aspects of the festival" now that the lineup is announced.

30 Seconds to Mars, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deftones and the Flaming Lips are also listed in the rock-leaning lineup, while Farrell will perform with both Jane's Addiction and his electronic side project PerryEtty. General two-day passes are now available for pre-sale at $110, while single day tickets will be made available on Feb. 11.

The first international edition of Lollapalooza arrives twenty years after the festival made its North American debut with Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails in 1991. Lady Gaga, Green Day, Soundgarden and Arcade Fire were among the headliners of the U.S. edition of Lollapalooza in August 2010, which marked its sixth year as a stationary festival in Chicago's Grant Park.

Jane's Addiction Headed in 'Completely Different Direction,' Says Dave Navarro

Despite some false starts and changing bass players three times, spirits are high as Jane's Addiction begins recording in earnest for its fourth album this week in Los Angeles.

"I'm really happy with where we are, musically speaking," guitarist Dave Navarro tells Billboard.com. "One thing I've come to learn and embrace about this band is, things take what [time] they take... I would say that all the changes we've gone through are a necessary part of this process this time. This is one of the most enjoyable journeys that I've been on in many, many, many years, and as a result I'm really not all that concerned about timetables and rushing to get this stuff out."
The group's Stephen Perkins was due in the studio Wednesday to work on drum sounds with producer Rich Costey and bassist Dave Sitek from TV On the Radio -- who's been working with the band since the fall but is not, Navarro notes, a new member of Jane's Addiction, contrary to reports that he is. The latest sessions come after some recording with original bassist Eric Avery in 2009 and then with Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver) in 2010. The album will be Jane's Addiction's first set of new material since "Strays" in 2003.
"To me it's important to not repeat what we did," Perkins explains. "We know we can make a rock record with rock riffs and a big drum beat. I don't want to do that. I want to go in and make a listenable onion with layers and layers and layers so you can actually digest it. It's definitely been a good writing experience and a good changing experience."

Perkins says Jane's Addiction is entering the studio with "music and ideas for days," while Navarro adds that "we probably have more material for this record than we've ever had for any record, which is a pretty great place to be." Both are circumspect about what they expect the album to sound like, however.

"I would hate to pigeonhole us by giving examples of what I believe the stuff sounds like," Navarro says. "It's a completely different direction for Jane's Addiction...However, it still sounds very much like Jane's Addiction." Perkins adds that "they're songs that take you on a journey, songs that grow from soft to hard to tribal to psychedelic to metal in one song. We're trying to explore that hybrid again."

Both agree that Sitek has been a positive addition to the camp -- a "nice, solidifying element to the lineup," according to Navarro, while Perkins says that Sitek has "opened up my eyes to a lot of new ideas as a drummer," particularly in using technology.

Both of the Jane's men say they optimally would like to see the album finished and ready for release by summer, with a tour to follow. But neither will guarantee that scenario. "I've learned my lesson not to predict the future, especially in terms of this band," Navarro says with a laugh.

Perkins, meanwhile, explains, "There is this feeling we can make something ambitious. There is this ambition we have in us to break ground again. We really want to, as artists, move forward. That's an exciting thing, just like in the old days. We want to capture that danger and excitement again, and it's worth taking our time to do that."

Exclusive: Perry Farrell Opens Up About Dave Sitek Joining Jane's Addiction In The Studio

Perry Farrell says that the next Jane's Addiction LP tentatively titled The Great Escape Artist sounds unlike anything else the group has ever created. "It's a strange mixture of that post-punk Goth darkness that Jane's had with what's going on today with groups like Muse and Radiohead," he tells Rolling Stone. "As much as I want to appease fans and make old Jane's fans love me, I just can't help myself from moving forward."

The band has been working on the album at a Los Angeles studio since early December with producer Rich Costey (Muse, Interpol) and TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, who plays bass and is co-writing songs with the band. "The first time we got together with Dave Sitek was in my garage," says Farrell. "I played him music and explained to him how I've been working the last few years on music. He was so for it. He was a proponent of my message and I was a proponent of the way he works, so we just decided to get together. Now he's a real important person in my life."

Sitek has spent hours jamming on loose ideas with Jane's guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins. "Then he'd go back and make clips using bits and pieces from the jams," says Farrell. "That requires hours of listening to jams, which I'm not up for. I enjoy writing lyrics and melodies, but I'm not a great instrumentalist, so I leave it up to the professionals."

Farrell has spent a lot of time at his home studio, honing ideas away from the rest of the band. "I spend five to eight hours straight," he says. "I like throwing ideas down, recording, taking shots, taking more shots, taking a break, having a drink and stepping outside of the process...We already have enough material for three albums."

The songs all relate to the general theme of The Great Escape Artist. "It's conceptual," Farrell says. "It could be escaping to the outdoors, or the great escape could be in your mind. We might even be able to escape the expectations of the old Jane's fans and come out with another great record." Farrell hopes to have a single out in March, and the album on store shelves sometime in the summer.

A tour will follow, but it's unclear who will play bass. Sitek is the fourth person to play bass in the past year for the band. In the summer of 2009 they reunited with original bassist Eric Avery, but he quit after an Australian tour in early 2010. "Eric did not want to record," says Farrell. "So we took him out of the equation. We couldn't live with not recording." (For Avery's side of the story, see video interviews with him here.)

Guns n' Roses bassist Duff McKagan replaced Avery, but he left playing a handful of shows with the band. "I couldn't really tell you what his problem was," says Farrell. "You can ask him. He's calling it 'creative differences.' I know he didn't like the idea of electronics at all. That was his complaint. We've got our gripes too, but what's the point?"

Chris Chaney, who played bass with Jane's on their 2003 disc Strays, sat in for a recent New Year's Eve show, but Farrell says he probably won't rejoin the group on a full-time basis. "I've got some ideas," says Farrell. "Amongst them would be Dave Sitek. He's not a guy that likes to go on tours though, so we haven't decided who it will be yet."

Even if Sitek doesn't join the band on tour, Farrell is confident that his contributions to the the new LP will be enough of a gift to the fans. "I want our songs to have a groove impact and hit you like an atom bomb," he says. "We've been doing that, so I feel like I'll die happy after this record."

Jane's Addiction have had countless public spats over the years, and they've broken up three different times but Farrell says that things are relatively smooth these days. "Dave and Steve and I are like brothers," he says. "I've got children and my kid smacked my other kid in the head this morning, but at the same time they hate being separated. On a plane one will say, 'I wanna sit with my brother.' That's how I feel about Dave and Steve. I hope they'd tell you the same thing."

Whats happening with the new Janes album?

Were in process of recording and I just tracked some stuff with the Epiphone about two weeks ago. I wanted some bright percussive acoustic coloring underneath some dirty distorted rock guitars to kind of widen it out a bit and have the notes be a little more articulated. So I used it for that. And, you know, Duff McKagen from Guns N Roses is in the band now, so we had a real creative burst over the past few months working with a new guy and having an all-new energy on board. Im really excited about it.

Are you enjoying working with them again?

Oh, yeah, yeah. One of the fortunate things for me is that having been in and out of this so many times, after a point you realize, this is what I do, this is the home that Im gonna be in. At the end of the day, we may have taken five or six-year hiatuses, but weve never really broken up. And the beautiful thing now is were all really unified as a band, but we also have our own personal identities and directions and lives and interests so we all have plenty of time to do Janes Addiction, for the most part, full-time and also be able to do other projects that interest us individually. We didnt have that luxury in the old days.

At their best, a Jane's Addiction performance is about much more than music, as frontman Perry Farrell tests his philosophy that "nothing's shocking" as often as possible. He is a ringmaster of the epic and perverse, orchestrating scenes and oddities onstage to accompany the endless rock & roll sideshow the band has perfected since the 1980s, and did so again Friday at an intimate but packed show at the Roxy in West Hollywood, California.

It was another local gig for the Los Angeles act, and the longest hometown show yet with new bassist Duff McKagan (formerly of Guns n' Roses and presumably still of Velvet Revolver). But the night began with a redheaded fetish performer named Miss Crash, who did a partial striptease and pierced her face and tongue with long, scary needles. It was a mild appetizer for what was to come.

Crash and another tattooed woman were suddenly hoisted above the stage from piercings clamped through the flesh of their backs, as a rear curtain fell and Jane's Addiction leapt to the stage to erupt with a delirious "Whores," an early song from the band's history. Swinging and kicking their high-heels, the women dangled above the band like decadent jewelry, as guitarist Dave Navarro gave one a shove to send her flying again for a panicked "Ain't No Right."

The 450-capacity Roxy was an appropriate setting for the band, as the club where Jane's recorded its first album release in 1987, the liveJane's Addiction. And watching from the VIP section was Billy Corgan, returning the favor of Farrell's visit to a Smashing Pumpkins show on the Strip just days earlier. The hour-long Jane's show was part of the BING Sunset Strip Concert Series.
The band's best-known radio hit, "Been Caught Stealing," was still tense and urgent, with a stretched out rhythm break from drummer Stephen Perkins and McKagan. During "Had a Dad," Perkins shook his Mohawk of blond curls as Farrell raised a wine bottle and leaned into Navarro during a rippling guitar solo, a cigarette burning between the guitarist's lips. For "Ted, Just Admit It . . ." Farrell stood above the crowd with arms wide open to lead the front rows in shouting the hypnotic opening mantra, "Everybody, everybody, everybody, everybody, everybod-ay-yey-yey-yey . . ."

Two months ago at the nightclub Bardot in Hollywood, Jane's revealed one new song ("Soulmate"), while Friday's Roxy set was built entirely from tunes first recorded by the original quartet by 1990. Old songs remain the backbone of the Jane's repertoire, with lyrics streetwise and impressionistic, and music of underground intensity and Zeppelin-scale ambition, while new material has yet to fully assert itself during the band's periodic reunions (though Friday's set list was originally to include 2003's "Superhero").

Jane's has always reconvened easily as a great live act, delivering on a grand scale from Coachella to Lollapalooza, but less so as makers of new songs to match their history. They continue to work at it, with a new album in the planning stages. A short-lived reunion with founding bassist Eric Avery last year made for some powerful live shows, but McKagan is no hired hand, and Farrell says the bassist has taken a direct role in songwriting for a new Jane's album.

Onstage, the renewed band already sounds engaged and ready to grow. "Many of you remember how great that music scene in L.A. used to be," Farrell told fans late in the show, smiling wickedly as he recounted the label bidding wars that wined and dined Jane's Addiction decades ago. "I don't keep track, I just keep going."

Late in Jane's Addiction hour-long set at the Roxy on L.A.'s Sunset Strip Friday night, Perry Farrell reminisced with the crowd about playing the club back in 1987 and the band's experience of recording its debut album live. "All of the record executives were eating out of our hands because they all wanted to sign Jane's Addiction," Farrell said. "Those were the good old days."

But no one who remembers Jane's from back in the day needed to be told that this show was special, too. Returning to the Roxy for a special "fans" show as part of the BING Sunset Strip Concert Series, original members Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and new bassist Duff McKagan, himself no stranger to the Strip, turned the clock back almost 25 years.

As the curtain rose a few minutes after 10PM, a striking redheaded woman began to do a striptease, bringing back memories of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow of Farrell's Lollapalooza tours in the '90s by running long needles through her lips and mouth. All of this took a matter of moments before she and a brunette on the other side of the Roxy stage were hung in harnesses and swung over the crowd while the band took the stage and ripped through opener 'Whores.'

The ladies stayed in the air, getting occasional pushes from Farrell and Navarro, for 'Whores' and 'Ain't No Right.' During the week, Farrell wrote on Facebook of looking for a local performance artist to "startle my friends." As in 1987, Jane's Addiction found that inciting the crowd with a combination of rock and visual shock is something they can still pull of better than anyone.

The crowd basked in being able to see the band in such a hallowed and intimate spot. Farrell, who by the end had his shirt all the way open, basked himself, telling the throng that hearing them yell for him inspired his swagger and strut. It called to mind the fury with which he first attracted L.A.'s attention in the '80s. The band's power and tightness ran as aggressively and loudly as a '78 Trans-Am.

During the epic 'Three Days,' Navarro, McKagan and Perkins united into one long, hypnotic, pulsating rhythm. A scintillating 'Ted, Just Admit it,' meanwhile, felt as provocative and dangerous as it did 20 years ago as the whole venue chanted, "Sex Is violence."

In a recent interview with Spinner, McKagan said, "The world needs new Jane's Addiction songs." This night proved him right, as the band reminded everyone just how intoxicating the mix of sexuality, art and real rock 'n' roll can be.

This past December, former Guns n Roses bassist Duff McKagan was having dinner with Janes Addiction frontman Perry Farrell. He was kind of bummed, says McKagan. He had just heard that [original Janes Addiction bassist] Eric Avery was leaving the band. McKagan offered to jam with Janes at Farrells home studio and within weeks was hired for the vacant bass position. re from the same musical time, the same town, the same era, says guitarist Dave Navarro. It was a natural fit.

A brief history of Janes Addiction, in photos.

Janes Addiction reunited in 2008 with Avery for the first time since the band initially split in 1991, but after a recent Australian tour, the bassist exited once again. It was a decision Eric made, says Navarro. s focused on making a solo record. McKagan adds, I dont have years of history with this band. So theres no like, Oh, what happened to that chick in 1989? still twenty-fucking-five years later. Everythings been great.

The group is taking it slowly for now, spending most of its time jamming at its L.A. rehearsal space. ve never been in a band I wasnt in from the beginning, says McKagan. So to play songs like Been Caught Stealing is pretty fucking kickass. Janes are working on their first album since 2003s Strays and plan to launch a world tour in 2011. For now, they are focused on writing new songs.

s 97 percent of what our time is geared towards, McKagan says. When I first sent some songs to Perry they were the in the usual style that I write music verse, chorus, chorus, bridge, double chorus, etc. If you listen to a great Janes Addiction song, though, theres no chorus! Its just riff, and then it goes into some psychedelic jam. Ive had to learn to sort of adapt as a songwriter. I just have to bring in a riff. Some snarling, mean, dark and dismal riff, thats going to be our thing.

The new gig comes at the perfect time for McKagan since his last band, Velvet Revolver which split with singer Scott Weiland in 2008 is on an hiatus. Slash is going to be touring [behind his new solo album] for at least the next year, and I cant afford to just wait around and see if somethings going to happen, McKagan says. These are my years to do something. Im probably at my peak creatively, and I want to use it. Im blessed to be able to get that chance now.

Despite the break, McKagan wants it known that there is no tension in the Velvet Revolver camp. Slash just made the album Ive known hes wanted to make since the Use Your Illusion tour in 1993, he says. We play in a band together, but were also friends. Being friends means giving each other space to do what your heart is telling you at the moment. The thing that happened with Scott [Weiland] happened how it happened. Im the last guy to say it was his fault or it was his fault. It doesnt matter. We have to move on. We could have gone straight in and started looking for a new singer after Scott left, but we were all just a little beat up. It was a tough last 18 months and not just with the band, but with management stuff, too.

And what about the next VR record? I dont know, a couple years down the line or whatever, McKagan tells RS. Nobody knows, and Im just doing the work thats being put in front of me and this is what feels pretty great.

Jane's Addiction Play Intimate Surprise Show

"Even in this tiny little room," said Perry Farrell to the 150 or so folks sharing the confines of Hollywood club Bardot, "I can feel an oceanful of love."

It might have been a convenient way for the Jane's Addiction frontman to lead the band appearing for the first time with GN'R alum Duff McKagan on bass into its confetti-laden final number, "Ocean Size." But it also summed up the appreciative mood of the audience around him.

For diehard fans, some of whom had been waiting since 10 a.m. for a wristband to the surprise show (announced two days before on the band's website) this was heaven: A chance to see the alternative rock gods play a room no bigger than a volleyball court.

Hitting the stage with an exultant "Happy Cinco de Mayo! Ay yi yi yi!" Farrell set the celebratory tone. With a bottle of wine in his hand, a huge smile, and uniquely bedazzled Converse high-tops, he cranked up the volume with an explosive take on Ritual de lo Obitual's opener "Stop!" complete with Dave Navarro's switchblade-attack guitars, Stephen Perkins' ultra-dynamic drumming, and McKagan's Avery-esque bass-playing.

"Ay yi yi yi!" Farrell called out again after the song ended. "Dave Navarro told me that means fuck yeah' in Spanish."

A fan appreciation show and a chance to test the waters with McKagan on bass, the set came off like a Jane's Addiction party with a few close friends.

"We want to wish a quick happy birthday to our girl Susan Holmes," Farrell said after completing a ferocious take on "Had a Dad" from 1988's Nothing's Shocking. And with that, he presented the former supermodel Duff McKagan's wife with a birthday cake before leading the crowd in a heartfelt recital of "Happy Birthday."

Then it was back to business completing a short but sweet eight-song set of classic Jane's tracks with only one tune that was newer than two decades old: An unreleased midtempo track called "Another Soul Mate."

"I tell you what man," Farrell said wistfully after a particularly transcendent romp through "Pigs in Zen," another of the four tracks plucked from Nothing's Shocking. "There's nothing like going to see a live music event in L.A."

He meant it as a tribute to the VIP guests in the audience including Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and ex-Fishbone Keyboardist Chris Dowd -- to whom he gave shout-outs afterward.

But to the mesmerized crowd gathered at his feet, it had a whole different meaning.

Certainly not Farrell, who used the holiday and the presence of new Jane's Addiction bass player Duff McKagan to throw a very exclusive gathering at Hollywood's intimate Bardot, which Farrell called "one of the great structures in Hollywood." "Elvis hung out here," he added. "And now you have too."

But Elvis never partied there like the lucky 100 or so people, plus celebrities like Tom Morello, Joaquin Phoenix and more, did Wednesday night. Playing under green, white and red flags in honor of Cinco De Mayo -- and with couches to host the band's closest friends and family right in front of the stage -- Jane's turned the club into a house party.

Of course, what else would they start with on Cinco de Mayo but 'Stop,' with its recorded Spanish intro that culminates with, "Juana's Adiccion"? The half-hour set found the band playing only seven songs and treating the night as if they were in their living room, with Farrell stopping mid-set to lead the crowd in singing 'Happy Birthday' to McKagan's wife, Susan Holmes. The frontman also introduced a who's who of L.A. musicians, from Fishbone's Chris Dowd, who Farrell called "one of the best players I've ever played with" to Morello and Guns 'N Roses' Gilby Clarke and Matt Sorum.

The quartet mixed one new song, 'Soulmate,' in with Jane's standards like 'Had a Dad,' 'Mountain Song,' 'Whores,' and 'Ocean Size,' as well as the surprising choice of 'Ain't No Right.' After the new song, Farrell remarked, "It fit right in there, didn't it?" Indeed, with a vintage Jane's feel, it sounded like it easily could have been an outtake or rarity from the 'Cabinet of Curiosities' box set. Musically, McKagan, who is an old friend of the band and came from the same L.A. scene, slid in to the foursome as smoothly as 'Soulmate' made its way into the set last night.

So, for those stuck on Hollywood and Vine last night, unable to get in past the mobs of people waiting and pushing into the show, fear not -- it looks like this version of Juana's Adiccion is going to be hosting a lot more parties soon.

Jane's Addiction Debut New Song, Duff McKagan At Intimate L.A. Gig

Jane's Addiction had special reason to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday night, performing for the first time with new bassist Duff McKagan for an intimate crowd of fans and friends in Hollywood. The quick seven-song set unfolded on the open-air patio of the nightclub Bardot, amid the Mexican dcor of piatas and sombreros, and revealed one new song, a seething, beverage-fueled "Soulmate."

"We had so many shots," a swaggering, smiling Perry Farrell told a small, but packed audience, "we thought we'd be reckless and play a new one for you." Fan footage of the fresh track is up on YouTube.

The rest of the set was mostly made up of Jane's Addiction classics from the band's first two studio albums (1988's Nothing's Shocking and 1990's Ritual de lo Habitual), beginning with an anxious "Stop," as Farrell wailed and danced with a wine bottle in his hand, stepping back as fans sang along to the a cappella passage, "Turn off that smokestack/and that goddamn radio/Hum along with me."

On his left stood McKagan in a black pinstriped vest and with "Soljer" scrawled across his bass, his tough, gloomy rhythms locked tight with drummer Stephen Perkins. The former bassist from Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver quietly joined Jane's early this year after the exit of founding member Eric Avery, and the band has been in rehearsals ever since, writing material for a new album aimed for release next year.

Gn'R and Jane's Addiction rose from adjacent corners of the mid-'80s hard-rock scenes of Los Angeles, and both were veterans of the notorious and influential underground club the Scream. Onstage with Jane's in 2010, McKagan set a thick, watery bassline against Navarro's speedy solo on "Whores" (from 1987), and it sounded like a collaboration built to last.

The quartet ignited the epic thunder and swirl of "Mountain Song," though there was little room on the tiny stage for the band to physically stretch out, only inches away from guests that included Tom Morello and Matt Sorum. Navarro removed his shirt for "Had a Dad," ripping up a churning riff as Farrell shimmied center stage.

The band paused for a moment to sing "Happy Birthday" and present a cake to McKagan's wife, Susan Holmes. There was soon an explosion of confetti as the band launched into a charged "Pigs in Zen" from Nothing's Shocking. "In this tiny room, I feel an ocean of love," said Farrell, standing in the ancient Hollywood structure (also home to the Avalon theater), the site of Jane's shows during the late '80s and early '90s. "Let's get in touch with our roots, eh, Mr. Navarro?"

Jane's then erupted against the Zeppelin-esque sweep of "Ocean Size," with sounds soaring and swelling, and Farrell pointing up and then falling to his knees like a crashing wave. As the song came to an end, Farrell signed off by praising his venue's vintage, Spanish-style architecture. "It's one of the great structures in California," Farrell said, proudly reconnecting his history with the building's pop music past, stretching from Sinatra to Nirvana. "Elvis has hung out in this place, and now you have too."

Janes Addiction reunited in 2008 with Avery for the first time since the band initially split in 1991, but after a recent Australian tour, the bassist exited once again. It was a decision Eric made, says Navarro. s focused on making a solo record. McKagan adds, I dont have years of history with this band. So theres no like, Oh, what happened to that chick in 1989? still twenty-fucking-five years later. Everythings been great.

The group is taking it slowly for now, spending most of its time jamming at its L.A. rehearsal space. ve never been in a band I wasnt in from the beginning, says McKagan. So to play songs like Been Caught Stealing is pretty fucking kickass. Janes are working on their first album since 2003s Strays and plan to launch a world tour in 2011. For now, they are focused on writing new songs.

s 97 percent of what our time is geared towards, McKagan says. When I first sent some songs to Perry they were the in the usual style that I write music verse, chorus, chorus, bridge, double chorus, etc. If you listen to a great Janes Addiction song, though, theres no chorus! Its just riff, and then it goes into some psychedelic jam. Ive had to learn to sort of adapt as a songwriter. I just have to bring in a riff. Some snarling, mean, dark and dismal riff, thats going to be our thing.

The new gig comes at the perfect time for McKagan since his last band, Velvet Revolver which split with singer Scott Weiland in 2008 is on an hiatus. Slash is going to be touring [behind his new solo album] for at least the next year, and I cant afford to just wait around and see if somethings going to happen, McKagan says. These are my years to do something. Im probably at my peak creatively, and I want to use it. Im blessed to be able to get that chance now.

Despite the break, McKagan wants it known that there is no tension in the Velvet Revolver camp. Slash just made the album Ive known hes wanted to make since the Use Your Illusion tour in 1993, he says. We play in a band together, but were also friends. Being friends means giving each other space to do what your heart is telling you at the moment. The thing that happened with Scott [Weiland] happened how it happened. Im the last guy to say it was his fault or it was his fault. It doesnt matter. We have to move on. We could have gone straight in and started looking for a new singer after Scott left, but we were all just a little beat up. It was a tough last 18 months and not just with the band, but with management stuff, too.

And what about the next VR record? I dont know, a couple years down the line or whatever, McKagan tells RS. Nobody knows, and Im just doing the work thats being put in front of me and this is what feels pretty great.

Duff McKagan Joins Jane's Addiction

Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins officially welcomed Duff McKagan to JANES ADDICTION as their new bassist when Farrell and Navarro yesterday both Tweeted a photo of the band at a writing session. The band is now writing their next album, tentatively due out in the winter of 2011 on Capitol and to be supported by a worldwide concert tour. Photos of the band at a Hollywood rehearsal space first emerged early yesterday morning at the fan website www.janesaddiction.org, causing the site to crash several times as fans began descending on it.

McKagan is best known for his work with Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver.
